EMDR

A way to neutralize the emotions of your traumas

EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing – is a well-respected method for assisting in release of memories associated with traumatic events.

From the Department of Veteran Affairs to the World Health Organization, over the past 30 years many studies have been done to validate the benefits of this integrative psychotherapy approach.

EMDR therapy includes a set of standardized protocols that incorporate elements from many different treatment approaches. Basically, EMDR uses a patient’s own rapid, rhythmic eye movements. These eye movements dampen the power of emotionally charged memories of past traumatic events.

Jenny had been struggling with anxiety and past traumas for years.

My friend says to see someone who does EMDR. I am like, “What the heck is that?” She tells me it helped her to no longer feel so emotional and stuck when memories pop up regarding her trauma.

I am curious to learn more. I find out that it’s about eye movement. More specifically stimulating both sides of the brain to process an incident down to just a memory without the emotional charge associated with it.

I was intrigued and decided to give it a try. It entails following lights with my eyes while listening to alternating sounds through headphones. This stimulates both sides of the brain to integrate and process down the events and emotions. The emotions feel less intense, and my negative beliefs start to not feel as strong either.

By the end of the session, I just stared at the light bar with the thoughts, “Umm, I don’t know how that works, but I want to take it home with me.” It really became intriguing to me on how I could feel better, less stressed, less anxious, less worried about what is going to trigger me and how I am going to be overwhelmed with panic. These feelings became less concerning.

What can EMDR help? Just trauma?

EMDR can be utilized for many different types of issues. It doesn’t have to be a big trauma. It can be a thought you can’t let go of, a phobia, performance issue, upcoming event you feel worried about, needing to build confidence, and many more issues.
